A friend had 2 Peter 1&2 thrown at him by a church elder in the attempt to get him to return to church and stop all “this nonsense” about freedom in Christ. And it seems to be working because he just can’t get past the final verses in Chapter 2.
For my friend, please consider that the warning in Chapter 2 is directly related to the discussion in Chapter 1 which Peter calls in verse 10 “mak[ing] your calling and election sure.” As Peter continues, he establishes his authority in saying, “We didn’t follow cleverly devised stories. No, we were there.”
And in establishing his authority to carry this message, he goes on, in what has become Chapter 2, to describe that others are perverting the message; again, a reference to the message he has just shared in Chapter 1.
So, there are two elements here, the message and the perversion of the message. To understand the perversion of the message and the falling away from the truth, it might be important to understand just what this message is. Otherwise, how will you know who is perverting what?
More to come.
