Phili...Oops! Part 3

Previously, I wrote:

In either situation, I am fortunate, because the message goes out, hazards are identified, and the mission is accomplished safely. When I return, I find that whether by selfish or selfless means, the safety message has been shared by all.

So, here is the difficult part, where Paul says his infamous statement, “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Just what does he mean, especially considering a following statement where he also says, “But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.” (Phil 1:23,24).

Again, I have to consider that this communication is taking part on two levels, based on the introduction. On the one hand, there are those who are oblivious to just who is Paul talking about when he says that some are “preaching Christ, even from envy and strife,” and on the other are just those people for whom those comments are intended.

It’s difficult to say something that conveys grace and at the same time slaps the face of someone to wake them up to their “fleshly” motives. So, currently, that is what I’m considering is the intent of this passage, a continuation of the thought I left you last time, that even though some actions are possibly intended for a selfish purpose, they actually accomplish.

Imagine the relief for those who are genuinely worried about Paul’s imprisonment as he says, “And convinced of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.” I can only think, “The reports of my demise are highly exaggerated.”

“For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

That’s not how they always taught that at church!
